Aquarium water typically contains too little CO2. Besides light, nitrogen, phosphate, trace elements, etc., CO2 is the most important nutrient for your aquarium plants. The stronger and healthier your plants are, the less likely algae are to develop. Furthermore, plants produce more oxygen than your fish need to breathe, and CO2 also regulates the water's pH at the correct level.
