Why measure nitrate concentrations in aquariums?

Nitrates develop from fish waste and uneaten food. They strongly promote algae growth and cause stress to fish at relatively high concentrations.
Optimal level: less than 10 mg/L.
Above 50 mg/L, it is recommended to partially replace the water with tap water low in nitrates (also measure the nitrate level before adding!).
