- Regular water changes
Food and plant matter, as well as metabolic byproducts, pollute aquarium water. Since aquarium filters cannot completely remove these substances, and many impurities settle to the bottom, regular partial water changes (approximately 1/3 of the water every 15 days) are necessary. Partial water changes should always be combined with siphoning the substrate to remove impurities. After a partial water change, it is essential to use a good water conditioner, such as JBL Biotopol, to acclimate the new tap water to the fish.Simple to use:
Hold the gravel cleaner in the aquarium water, shake it up and down, and hold the end of the hose in the bucket. The water will then flow into the bucket. Clean the substrate with the gravel cleaner. Finally, simply remove the gravel cleaner from the water and/or close the tap at the end of the hose.How to properly clean the substrate of your aquarium:
Push the gravel cleaner into the substrate of your aquarium using a circular motion. The substrate and debris are drawn upwards into the gravel cleaner. Pulled down by its own weight, the substrate falls back down, and only the dirt is suctioned out of the aquarium. For fine sand, you can adjust the suction by lifting the gravel cleaner so that the light sand also falls back down by gravity. A built-in sieve in the gravel cleaner prevents fish or shrimp from being accidentally sucked up. The sieve can be removed for cleaning.If you are using a slow-release fertilizer under the gravel cover layer (e.g. JBL PROFLORA AQUA BASIS), you should avoid pushing the cleaning bell into the soil until it hits the bottom glass, and do not go deeper than the thickness of the soil substrate layer.
