Shrimp form a very large group and have developed very different feeding strategies. Very peaceful, broom shrimp (Atya) filter plankton particles from the water using their fan-shaped legs. Claw shrimp (Macrobrachium) are predators and even eat other shrimp. Most shrimp of the genera Caridina and Neocaridina are peaceful and scrape algae and microparticles from the substrate using their mouthparts. The lakes of Sulawesi Island are home to shrimp species that have adapted to these very specific environments. The beautiful cardinal shrimp (C. dennerli) feed on algal mats (aufwuchs), but only in the immediate vicinity of their refuge. Bee shrimp search for and find their food using their sense of smell.
