Bettas are peaceful aquarium inhabitants and get along well with all fish that don't fit in their mouths. Only a male of the same species will be fought to the death – hence their name! These beautiful, long-finned fish found in pet stores are all of the Betta splendens species, also commonly used in Asia for fighting. Bettas and many other labyrinth fish (gouramis, colisa, and macropods) live in both still and flowing waters. Ambush hunters, they suddenly propel themselves to catch an insect resting on the water's surface with their powerful mouths. They do not eat any aquarium plants and do not need much space. To keep females alongside a male, several females will be necessary. A single female would be too harassed by the male. The most well-known betta species build bubble nests on the water's surface, guarded by the male. Other betta species practice mouthbrooding. They keep the eggs in their mouths until the fry hatch and are large enough to fend for themselves. Water parameters aren't really critical for bettas. They prefer soft water and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, but can also tolerate other parameters. It's important that their food mimics their natural diet.
