Aquarium water almost always contains too little carbon dioxide (CO2). In addition to light, nitrogen, phosphate, trace elements, etc., aquarium plants need CO2 as the most important nutrient. The more the plants grow strong and healthy, the less the algae are lucky. They also produce more oxygen, which fish need to breathe. And finally, if it is properly dosed, CO2 also regulates the pH of water.
