Sometimes plants surprise us by suddenly deviating from their normal growth pattern. This is called a mutation, and Lobelia cardinalis 'Mini' is a good example. Lobelia cardinalis 'Mini' is therefore a hybrid of the general Lobelia cardinalis variety. It is characterized by its beautiful light green leaves, which are closer together than those of the original Lobelia, and it is also significantly smaller, hence the addition of "Mini" to the plant's name.
Growth is low and dense, as the plant branches readily, even without pruning. Furthermore, the 'mini' version rarely forms the long, vertical shoots that otherwise characterize Lobelia cardinalis.
It propagates easily by planting the cut shoots in the substrate. Lobelia cardinalis 'Mini' becomes more compact under good lighting conditions and with added CO2, but also thrives without it.
